Fixing PA’s solar market

May 23rd, 2011 § 2

With a solar renewable energy credit (SREC) market on the verge of shambles and a plummeting SREC price, Pennsylvania is in desperate need of a fix (details here). Fortunately, the state’s local solar industry has just the tool to fix it.

Vote Solar, the local industry and other state advocates are on the eve of launching a critically important campaign to ensure that the Commonwealth can maintain its position as a solar leader and provide various opportunities to harness the sun.

On Tuesday, May 24th, the PA Solar Energy Industries Association (PASEIA) will host a press conference in Harrisburg where solar champion Representative Chris Ross will introduce his initiative to save solar in PA. House Bill 1580 directly addresses the state’s oversupplied SREC market by making some vital adjustments to PA’s solar requirements over the next few years.

Please visit our PA campaign page for more details, or here for more details about the campaign launch in Harrisburg tomorrow.

I truly hope HB 1580 passes because I just installed 43 solar panels at my home. The system will generate 8 kilowatts for the year. I signed up to sell my SREC’s based on the current market price, which was $300.00 per kilowatt. It is now around $50.00 per kilowatt. So instead of receiving $2400.00 for the energy I’m generating, I’ll be looking at $400.00!

I won’t live long enough to see the payback on the install at these rates!

Why are the people who installed solar panels –to improve the enviornment— getting screwed?
We invested in our future and “the governments” keep changing the rules!
