Lexington. Concord. Albany. That’s right, Albany.
It is no secret that these are troubled times. In a global economy that is spiraling out of control, New York is at the epicenter. The health care and the financial services industries are amongst the hardest hit and in case you hadn’t heard, New York sort of depends on those. When all is said and done the State Comptroller expects 225,000 people will be laid off.
As Governor Paterson put it in Wednesday’s (January 7th 2009) New York State of the State address: The State of our State … is perilous.
But the Governor wasted no time in moving from despair to hope. From crisis to opportunity. From cowardice to courage. He reminded New Yorkers that these things, courage and hope, are “our birth right.” The history of New York has been one of triumph of overwhelming odds. He drew parallels to the Great Depression and the Revolutionary War.
And a new revolution is exactly what he says we need. A clean energy revolution, that is. One that supports new jobs, affordable energy and a more sustainable future. The first shot fired? By 2015, he wants to meet 45% of the state’s electricity needs through improved energy efficiency and renewable energy measures.
It’s not so far fetched; New York has done it before. During the Great Depression, we got right back to work with state investment in projects like the Empire State building and hydro power – a resource that brings New Yorkers our cheapest, cleanest electricity to this day.
So let’s do it again. Let’s let the Governor know that if he wants to start a clean energy revolution, we’ve got his back.
