PUC of Nevada Approves to Delay Unnecessary Demand Charge
The Nevada Public Utilities Commission (PUCN) has approved a request made by NV Energy to postpone the implementation of its demand charge today. While NV Energy had requested to move the start date from April 1 to October 1, the Commission extended the delay further to January 1, 2027. The request was made after NV Energy received major backlash, with communities and advocate organizations calling the demand charge unnecessary. Vote Solar, along with other groups, has filed suit against the PUCN for its initial approval of the demand charge. Despite the postponed implementation date, the legal challenge remains ongoing.
The following statement was issued by Chauntille Roberts, Vote Solar’s Regional Director for the Interior West:
“The Commission’s decision to delay the implementation of the demand charge acknowledges what communities already know— that this fee is unreasonable and unjustifiable for families to bear. While this decision may provide short term relief during the summer, it will not protect families next year.
“The Commission still has a commitment to the people they serve, the real solution is to remove the demand charge altogether. Until that happens, Nevada families will continue to face avoidable financial strain.”
