Vote Solar States
Affordable solar is helping families, schools and businesses take charge of their power supply and their electricity bills like never before - and all of that new local clean energy benefits all of us. But now traditional power interests are working to stall continued solar progress by taking aim at net metering, adding new fees and otherwise changing utilities rates to put solar out of reach for most consumers.
We believe that everyone has the right to generate his or her own power from the sun - and we work hard to preserve that right in states nationwide.
Net metering allows solar customers to use clean energy to power their own homes or businesses and then receive fair credit on their utility bills for the excess electricity they send back to the grid for use nearby. In place in 44 states, this simple crediting arrangement is one of the most important state policies for enabling Americans to produce their own power from the sun.
Net metered solar power reduces the need for expensive, polluting traditional power infrastructure, which reduces costs, supports local jobs, and improves health in our communities. It's a win-win for everyone.
The way that utility rates are structured has a tremendous impact on the pay-back of a customer’s solar energy system. Rates should be designed to keep the way clear for solar and ensure fairness for all customers.
